Planting

Trees & Shrubs:

  • Plant or transplant before summer & monitor for pests.
  • Don't forget to prune azaleas, camellias, and gardenias after flowers drop, but before new buds form.

Perennials:

  • Plant perennials, such as: day lilies, coneflowers, and black-eyed Susans.Divide overcrowded perennials like irises and hostas.

Annuals & Tropicals:

  • Some annual sun plants for May: verbenas, periwinkle, ageratum, marigolds, zinnia, petunia, wax begonia, clematis, four-o'clocks and portulaca in full sun.
  • Some annual shade plants fo May: impatiens, coleus, sweet alyssum, lobelia and annual dianthus in shade.
  • Bring your potted tropical plants outside!

Vegetables:

  • Plant warm season crops (peppers, squash, peas, beans, corn, okra, parsley, watermelon, cantaloupe, eggplant, cucumbers, and tomatoes)
  • Apply a well-balanced fertilizer at planting.

Attract Pollinators:

  • Plant nectar-rich flowers. Such as:Zinnias, Lantana, Butterfly Bush, Cosmos, Black-Eyed Susans, Abelia, etc.

Pruning & Propagating

Bouquets: 

  • Cut bouquets routinely to keep plants pruned and to prolong blooming season.
  • Use Ferti-lome Blooming & Rooting to promote more blooms!

Repotting: 

  • Repot houseplants during active growing season from end of April to September.

Propagating: 

Lawn Maintenance

  • Bermuda & Zoysia: End of May - Fertilize warm-season grasses (Bermuda & zoysia) with a well-balanced fertilizer as they enter active growth.
  • Centipede: Fertilize with Ferti-lome Centipede Wood & Feed
  • St. Augustine: Use Ferti-lome Weed-Out Plus Lawn Fertilizer
